The team at BET grew directly from the group at Powerplex Technologies Inc. and later ABB Advanced Battery Systems Inc., who were developers and manufacturers of NaS (Sodium Sulphur) battery technology for electric vehicles during the 1980's and early 1990's. One of the key projects at that time was providing batteries and technical support for early pure electric prototypes such as Ford's Ecostar delivery van.Development of the NaS battery was then taken on by other organizations and is still used today, mainly in large-scale grid and utility applications. NaS technology was also the precursor to the NaNiCl battery which is used today in a wide variety of transportation applications. As such, the team at BET has significant hands-on experience with these types of batteries.
