Jigoro Kano was born October 28, 1860 in Mikage Japan. He is the founder of Kodokan Judo. Born at the dawn of the Meiji era, a period of outward and cultural renewal, Jigoro Kano is the youngest of five children. He grew up in a wealthy family; his parents owned a brewery sake. At nine, he lost his mother. His father was then appointed to Tokyo. Schoolboy and brilliant student, he is very interested in Western culture. Bullied by his classmates because of his weak constitution, he is interested in Jiu-Jitsu he began studying in 1877 under the tutelage of three successive masters Hachinosuke Fukuda and Iso Masamoto Tsunetoshi Iikubo.
