Top 5 Preparations Before Getting Auto Repair

Building a solid relationship with your mechanic is important. The following tips will help you get faster service and fewer headaches!

1. Clean your car

It’s both rude and inconsiderate to have a cluttered car when getting work done. Mechanics shouldn’t have to tip-toe around your personal possessions when they’re trying to fix your vehicle. It’s in yours and your mechanic’s best interest to have a clean working environment, so please take a few minutes before heading to the garage and get rid of any papers, wrappers and underwear (Yes, I said underwear! Every mechanic has at least one story about finding undergarments left behind by their owners!). Make certain that you leave nothing that could get in the way or possibly be broken. It’s also recommended you try to remove or minimize any foul odors that might be trapped in your upholstery.

2. Bring bolt keys if you have lock bolts!

If you have locks on your rims make sure you bring the bolt key. Most new cars will come with lock bolts but not all garages have the keys for every lock bolt design. The only method for removing a lock bolt without the key is to break the bolt. This method can sometimes scratch the rim and cause other surface damage.

3. Try your best to describe the problem

It’s very helpful for your mechanic if you can describe the problem to them with as much detail as possible. If you hear a banging noise only when you reach 50 km/h and above, be sure to mention it. Pay attention to these details. Relaying this information to your mechanic can really quicken the repair process and have you back on the road sooner.

4. Tell your mechanic about your car’s repair history

If you’ve had work done at another garage you’ll want to tell your mechanic about it. This includes having had any custom parts installed. This information is vital to your mechanic and will greatly improve his ability to troubleshoot your problem.

5. Maintain your vehicle

Regularly checking the air pressure in your tires and the oil in your engine is vital to your car’s health. Your mechanic will nag every time he sees you if you don’t so do him and yourself a favor and stay on top of it.
